Eclectic Quilt and Giveaway

I’ve joined in with the “Show Your Stripes” blog hop.  Many thanks to Carla of
Creatin’ In The Sticks for allowing me to join and all her hard work of organizing a successful blog hop.

My stripes project began with a smallish quilt.  55” X 60”
Using a bundle of Tim Holtz fabric fat eighths that I have had stashed for a few years.
I pulled out the bundle, plus considered a few extra pieces to add to it.

I cut the pieces into 2.5” strips.

I arranged a line-up and stitched the strips together end to end.  I made the top using the jelly roll race technique except in a controlled manner.

Because I’m terrible at accepting the unknown.  I had to have some control.

I squared it up and quilted it.

Added the binding.  I know, shocking that it isn’t a striped binding!  Who would’ve guessed for a stripes blog hop that I wouldn’t use a stripe for the binding.

Hand stitching the binding to the back is my favorite part of quilting.

And DONE!

I love including selvedges in my quilts.  I stitched the few selvedge strips end to end for a fun narrow row.

That’s another stored project OUT of storage.  It is my last long stored project.  What a super feeling to have ZERO planned projects in storage.

I also don’t want to keep making scraps to store.  I had some strips leftover.  They became a pillow.

But there are STILL some strips and pieces of strips!

Too hard to just toss them out.  And I can’t just keep keeping them. Too many scraps become too chaotic for me.  So I stitched them all together.

Then cut that slab in half, stitched it end to end and I now have a long hot pad for the table.

That’s it.  I always find it amazing how far a fat eighth collection will go.

The Giveaway...

I have a striped fabric postcard that I will send to one of my followers.  Simply include in your comment that you’d like to receive this postcard in your mail.  I will contact the winner for mailing info.

  2. How wonderful that you found this line of fabric and held on to it to make something so pretty. It reminds me of a card background, and Tim Holz does a lot of that sort of thing, too. Beautiful!

  10. I agree with the keeping of scraps. I hate to throw them out but I also cannot keep storing them. I love your ideas of a small runner and pillow for the extras. I would also love a postcard! Thank you!

  11. I love the distance you covered with this fabric. The idea of using the scraps at the same time you produced them is mind boggling. And yes I am really confused about your choice of binding for the quilt :-} Of course I'd love a chance to receive one of your postcards. Oh and your projects were wonderful, I know that was supposed to be the first sentence not the last.

  12. I love those fabrics and what a fun way to use them. I have to say, I'm just more than a little jealous that you have no more projects not finished hiding anywhere. I could sure set you up with plenty! LOL!! Hand stitching the binding is my favorite part of the quilt too, especially on those cold winter nights. It's fun to snuggle under it and stitch!

  14. You are a strip genius! Usually, those jelly roll race quilts don't appeal to me, but with your controlled application, this one turned out great! It always feels good to get one more project done and use up every single strip...kudos on your creativity! Even using those selvages is a bonus! Yes, I'd love a go at receiving your artsy postcard...add me to the list of wannabes!

  23. I love Tim Holtz fabrics and made something very similar for my grandson (and used up the left over in a pillow). I like the edea of adding the little strip of selvedge in the quilt.

  25. What a great quilt. I love the fabric line you used and the 'control' was used very well. I'm glad you use the scraps up. Super ideas.

  26. For years I thought I had to buy yards of fabric. Your projects made from a bundle of fat 1/8ths shows how every small scrap can make many things.

  27. It IS amazing how much you made from that fat 8th collection. LOVE those fabrics and such a fun way to make a quilt. It's perfect. That post card is pretty amazing too. Love it all! Thanks for a great post in the Show Your Stripes Blog Hop.

  29. OMG!! I am in LOVE with ALL of your projects for the Hop!!! Interesting idea to sort your strips for a more controlled Jelly Roll Race outcome. Super cute fabric post card!! Thanks for the opportunity to win it. I would LOVE to add it to my collection (which I enjoy displaying on the gallery wire in my studio!!)

  30. Your quilt and pillow are fantastic! I know what you mean about having the leftover fabric - mine is becoming overwhelming. In fact, I have been looking for scrap patterns to try to use some up.

  31. Your stripes ended up being great projects--good use of everything!!

  32. It's a long time since I've seen a bloghop I wonder if they are particular to the quilting community.
I love seeing your fabrics before they are sewn together. I especially like the third photo where they look as if they are on the starting line for the Jelly Roll race. Although having looked back and forward maybe the previous photo is the start of the race?
You've said you like control of the strips but the strips all stitched together look pleasingly random to me, so I obviously don't know the Jelly Roll race rules.
There are a couple of other mysteries to me here but this comment is in danger of being too long so I'll post it before Blogger eats it.

  33. Continuing....
I love these little jelly coloured clips you are using, I must try to get some of these to hold sketchbooks open. The mystery of the moment is on the photo afterwards which has the quilt divided into squares with pale edging?????? which doesn't look like the finished quilt?????? Am I missing something?
Then there is a cushion and a hot pad, both of which each deserve their own blogpost.
And a sweet little pile of innocent scraps.
    And great photographs all along.
    Gosh.

  34. Oh, Wow! I love it all: the quilt, the pillow, the hot pad for the table, the postcard! I don't know how you get so much done...and done so beautifully, but it always makes me happy to visit and discover what you've created!

  35. Great quilt, love the fabrics, and how awesome to use up every tiny bit.

  36. Great quilt, I love it and especially all your bonus projects to use up every bit of the leftovers. I consider using it all up to be a very smart move (you know why I say this).
I'm interested in how you sorted the strips to control how the jellyroll sewing all came together so cohesively,

  37. What perfectly inspiring ways to stretch a fat eighth collection to the very limit. A beautiful quilt (love the selvedge addition) a pillow cover and a hot pad! I am impressed. Your post card is just the cutest! I love it. What fun it would be to get that in the mail
