Faux Postage Fun

Faux postage making was a fun afternoon of paper play.

From other challenge blogs, I have found Try It On Tuesday .
This fortnight they are challenging artists with BUTTERFLIES.
Butterflies are a favorite to add to art.

I’ve made faux postage before that was a part of the inking and stamping design.  I hadn’t made separate pieces to use as ephemera.  So it was fun to make these.

I had a postage edge die that I’ve not used much.  It was perfect for these.  Cut, they measure 1.75” X 1.25”.  Paper scraps are perfect for making these.  I cut the base paper and inked the edges.
I cut a lighter scrap using the same die then cutting off the postage edges and inking the straight edges.
The two pieces are then glued together.

Then the search for designing the stamps...the really fun part.

That roll of Washi tape has 5 different butterflies on it.
I’d made 7 bases so I used a bicycle washi tape and then a small flower rubber stamp colored with Tombow markers.

These ephemera pieces are going to be fun to add to my art.

  2. Annie, we ought to alert the USPS so you could design the next stamps! (Have you heard that stamps are going up to 58 cents in August?) These are so precious with your coloring and perfect choice of butterflies. You always amaze me.

  8. I don't know how I missed this post, but I am in awe. I just bought some new dies and I think one is the same size you used. It took me awhile, but I finally figured out where you got the postage amounts. You are SO clever. I love these and might just have to make something similar. I hope if I do, you will consider it an homage and borrowed (grin).

    1. Thank you Elizabeth. I see that I forgot to include the number stamps in my supplies photo. The cents symbol is a part of a very old numeric stamp set. Faux postage has been being made by artists for years. Not my original idea. So feel free to make your own as you wish. I’m sure there are lots of YouTube tutorials showing a variety of ways that artists make their faux postage stamps.

  9. Great little pieces. At one time the UK Post Office published a set of postcards that were enlargements of stamps when they produced fancy stamps. Your stamos reminded me that I have a set of butterfly postcards somewhere! xx

  11. Oh my gosh, you hired a housekeeper and went to the chocolate factory! I'm so envious! Love your work. Those postage stamps are amazing. Can you tell me a little more about those books you read. Any recommendations?

  12. These postage stamps are beyond anything, so intricate and full of details on such a small scale. Your description and photographs of how you made the start-off stamps had me looking for a while, so much detailed cutting and fitting. The butterfly ones are terrific and I love the last two with the bicycle and the coloured little flower which is actually my favourite.
I also, as always, enjoyed reading your calendar. I like the little flower stamping on the coloured squares.
