Awful Art Rescue

Another awful art rescue.

It began as an art journal page.  But I got ‘ART’ crooked on the page.  I couldn’t live with it.  It was the only part of the page where modeling paste was used so it really stuck out.  I literally tore the page out of the book and put it in the trash.  Of course the next day I pulled it out thinking I could save part of the page to make a postcard.

I cut the page in half.  I added modeling paste through a numbers/alpha stencil.  I really liked how it looked.  So much so that I knew I would never mail it.  That bit of success encouraged me to try and fix the other half into a postcard.

‘ART’ is still crooked, but not quite so much as it was and I can live with it.  Had I straightened it more, then the other parts of the card would be crooked.  I needed a happy medium for all elements.  I did a bit more fine tuning on both postcards.  They were then decreed keepable together.

Since I was not going to mail these postcards, I decided they needed to turn back into an art journal page.  My new struggle was to create a background for the postcards.  There’s quite a bit of paint adjusting on that page...too light...too dark...not light enough...then finally just right.

For this journal page I used acrylic paints, Gesso, modeling paste, stencils, Distress Spray Stain, rubber stamping, Distress Ink, Distress Oxide Ink and Distress Crayons.

I’m linking my journal page to the following challenges:
Art Journal Journey for this month’s theme TYPE.

  2. Terrific recovery! I always forget about my modeling paste--partly because I was never successful with it. Love how you use it for texture and interest. :)

  3. Oh Annie - this is fabulous! I really really love it. Who would think that life in this started out as an accident - it was the happiest of accidents I have seen. It turned into a fabulous journal page which works so well for the theme at AJJ. Lots of types of type here. Love the thought of texture in real life too.
    Superbe.

  6. I'm so glad you pulled your page from the bin Annie. Your postcards look wonderful with their soft rainbow colours. The collage of stamps behind the modelling paste lettering creates a great sense of depth and interest.
It looks like you had more fun than frustrations resurrecting this fabulous project xx

  7. I love how you saved this Annie. What a great idea. It is a super page with the 2 postcards, and I like how the postcard on the bottom one has that bit of a crooked look, but that would bug me too if I left it as a single page. Thanks for sharing at Neet's Type challenge at AJJ, and happy weekend. Hugs-Erika

  8. I'm so glad you salvaged these Annie and don't they look super displayed in your journal. I adore that stamp set, one of my favourites may I say, all so beautifully layered and that quirky offset adds even more interest as we tilt our heads to take it all in.
Thank you so much for sharing with us @ Creative Artiste, always a pleasure to see you.
    Creative wishes Tracey xx

  9. Good save! Although I don't see why you would be displeased by the crooked word in the first place. I never feel like hand stamping needs to be perfect.

  11. Annie you need to embrace your wonky side so it won't bother you, lol! I tend to like asymmetrical, but hubby is all perfect symmetry. I guess we all have our thing. I like the work you did on your page.

  12. It's funny how art which has been sitting in the trash can improve after a bit of quiet.
I'm happily joining in with your struggle here as I know there is going to be a happy ending.
So let me get this right - it was an Art Journal page which you cut in two to make postcards then because you would not be sending them out you joined them together again to make an art journal page (via the waste-paper basket).
It looks great in the end and I like these colours you have used, soft pinks and yellows. The word "ART" is still defiantly a little squinty and it looks good and even looks Arty.

  13. Wonderful that you rescued your ART page and reworked it to save. Your monthly calendar pages are fabulous and a great way of creating a diary. Summer sunshine has been overtaken with smoke from all the devastating fires. So grateful we moved out of the forest to the desert.

  17. Wow, Annie, first, thank you for visiting my blog and commenting! I've come over to yours and have decided I NEED to see your art so I've subscribed to your blog via follow.it and then went over to Flickr and followed you. I am way behind on adding my stuff there but hope to find time to catch that up. Love how you rescued this. All the layers so cool. And yes, the aj page background is important too, the butter yellow is perfect to show off the postcards, xoxo

  20. Oh Annie I love this especially the torn crooked ART. How are we to know you didn't do it on purpose. Amazing lot of bits and bobs. You really know how to add on and not overdo it. So much fabulous eye candy. Full of awesomeness.

  21. Sorry I missed this. This is a perfect art journal page turned PC, then turned back! I love it and totally would have never noticed "art" being off... I still only maybe barely see it. But I love it either way!!
