Snowman Challenge

Thanks to a new challenge I found, I have my first Christmas card for December 2022!

This is a monthly themed challenge at the blog of   The Joyful QuilterThe link to the challenge rules: https://thejoyfulquilter.blogspot.com/p/2022-table-scraps-challenge.html.
January’s challenge is snowmen/red.
I loved the Christmas tag I made in December, shown here, with the snowman and wondered how well he’d make into a Christmas card.  I’m combining my fabric scraps with my paper crafts to make cards this year.  At least that is the plan.  It will depend on how well the monthly challenge fits with that plan.  Fabric postcards are always an option too.

I began with fabric scraps backed with Wonder Under and cut using cutting dies.

I then chose a background fabric (red) cutting it and a piece of cardstock to a 4X6 inch size.  I fused the pieces to the background and stitched them down.  Adding a section of selvedge for a scarf.

I then began embellishing with foil paper punched circles on the holly and paper punched circles for buttons, a snowflake punched from glitter paper and a heat embossed message. I stitched the finished panel to the front of a folded card.
I sprayed ink through a stencil for the envelope.

Inside the card is a heat embossed message stitched to a background paper then taped to the inside of the folded card.

I love mixing sewing with paper crafts.  I can’t wait to find out what the February challenge will be.

December 2021 calendar journal

I don’t normally show progress photos, but this is what has been keeping me quite busy for the past month.  A massive cross stitch.  350 stitches X 349 stitches.  I have completed the first 39 rows...13,650 stitches.  Only 108,500 stitches to go!

Happy stitching of one type or another!

Christmas Decor Tags and Cards

I love when there is time during the Christmas season to create with a Christmas theme.  I managed a couple of decor tags to add to my collection to hang around the house.

Front and back

Both tags began on craft paper embossed with an embossing folder that I inked with red inks before running it through the embossing machine.  Then embellished with die cuts and stamping.

Following are Christmas cards I managed to get made this year.

I wish a very merry little Christmas to one and all!
Be safe and be happy.
May the world have the happiest New Year ever!

Money and Gift Card Wrapping

It gets a little harder every year to come up with a different money gift holder from the previous years.  But once again, I made it happen.

I used the 1-2-3 Punch Board to create these envelope style holders for money gifts.  I folded in three sides of the envelope and left one end open.

I then embossed the holders and used a variety of dies to cut the designs for the ornament embellishment.  I used Graphmaster Metallic Brush pens to color the holly leaves green and made the berries silver.  Letter dies to add names.

I embossed in red words from Tim Holtz Tidings Mini stamps then framed them using a cutting die.  I left them long enough to write personal messages on each.  Then I clipped the tag to the money.  A little wired and curled ribbon added to the top with a string to hang and DONE.

For a gift card, I used the Tim Holtz Pocket Envelope Bigz die.

Embellishing the envelope with snowflake dies, and a stamped and embossed Do Not Open tag.  The ties are attached with snowflake brads and tied with a soft blue and white cord.  I spattered white paint for a snowy appearance.  I needed to keep it rather flat to mail inside a card.

Christmas Gift Bag

For December I have the honor of being the guest designer on the

The monthly challenges are always ‘anything goes’.  You only need to use at least three different mediums for your project.

I’ve altered a craft bag into a Christmas gift bag.  It’s December, it’s Christmas time, my house is filled with Christmas music and I’m full of the Christmas spirit!

First I slopped white acrylic paint onto the front of the craft bag.  Let it dry then sprayed and dribbled some Distress Mica Stain, Snow Flurries (blue) and Peppermint Stick (red).

After that all the embellishing began.  Snow flakes cut from glitter paper with cutting dies.  Stars cut from silver metallic paper, including some dots from the cutting die.

‘Merry’ is cut from red metallic paper using a cutting die and the words were stamped with Archival Ink.

I glued rhinestones in the centers of the snow flakes and tied a bow around the handle with colored twine pieces.

I was finished with the bag until I saw the pinecone and berries wired pick that has been in my stash forever almost.  The bag looked okay but not satisfyingly so.  When I tied the wired pick to the bow, THEN it was finished!

And you know me, even the back has to exhibit a little interest.

Christmas In The Kitchen

I’ve made loads of potholders over the years but have NEVER made Christmas potholders.  How can that be?

I still had scraps from my Bah-Humbug Christmas Quilt and Pillow
Realizing I had no Christmas themed/colored potholders, I continued to play with the smallest Triangle Ruler.

I really enjoy playing around with the designs that half square triangles can make.

The thing about scraps for me is that they only make more scraps.  Because there aren’t quite enough scraps to make something, I always need to cut off a bit more from the yardage to finish my scrap project!  It’s still fun to ‘try’ using them up though.

I thought about gifting them to my friend who loves to cook and bake, but I couldn’t part with them.  I’ll make her some everyday ones.  I just had a thought.  Potholders wear and wear out.  Maybe I will make her a new set annually.  Oh!  Good idea, Annie!

This is the end of my Christmas sewing this year.  How fun it was to sew Christmas items at Christmas time.  I did not expect to finish any of these items by Christmas.  That’s a bonus gift to myself.  Time to get some ingredients in that bowl now!

Merry Christmas!

Bah-Humbug Christmas Quilt

It was about time for me to have a Christmas Quilt.  This is it and just in time to enjoy it for a few weeks this Christmas.

I used Leila Gardunia’s Scrappy Triangles.  A collection of 53 paper piecing blocks.  I was hoping to use up some of the Christmas fabrics that have been in my stash for a long time.  Using some up is the perfect excuse to shop for some new pieces...right?

I loved sewing the blocks and watching the design come to life, all the while listening to Christmas music...since just before Halloween.

I’m not one that names my quilts.  But, this is when this Christmas quilt got its name, Bah-Humbug!
The first column I stitched together on the right end revealed two blocks a bit smaller than the other six.  That was not going to be good for this design.  I was so upset thinking how many more will there be?  I just wanted to throw the whole mess away!  I already had so much time invested in the blocks.  Within the hour I decided to sew it all together (trying not to notice how the blocks wouldn’t line up nicely), quilt it and donate it somewhere.
BAH-HUMBUG!!!

The other thing I didn’t like was needing to keep the papers on the blocks until they were all sewn together.  (I started removing some paper from a few blocks but quickly realized I was going to have an even bigger struggle than just mis-sized blocks).  I did remove the seam allowance papers to make it easier to press the seams.

Guess what?  There were no other mis-sized blocks!  Only the two on the end.  That made me happier.  I was also very happy to get those papers off.

But then I began quilting the thing.

It seemed like a lot of black.  I thought I’d give the black some interest by stitching with red thread.  I worried about it for awhile before starting.  My fear was realized just as I knew it would be.  I cannot sew a straight line to save my own life let alone someone else’s.  It really shows on the solid black.  I knew I gave this quilt the right name!  At this point I couldn’t wait to get it done and get it out of my sight.  So much so that I had to take a break from it and try a Christmas pillow instead.

For the pillow I used the smallest Triangle Ruler.

I just used scrap bits left after finishing the quilt blocks.

This was calming my upset over the quilt.

I don’t really know how I feel about the design for a pillow, but I do know that I liked it better than the quilt, mostly because it was not near the trouble the quilt has been.

When I was finished with quilting the quilt and it was no longer just 12 or so inches away from my face, the crooked straight line quilting stopped bothering me because it wasn’t noticeable.

As I was hand stitching the binding, I realized that it was the exact detail the quilt needed.  At that moment I fell in love with this quilt!

I think it’s bold and subtle at the same time.  I love that.
This quilt measures 58” square.  Just right for cuddling under to watch Christmas movies.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.
